Approximately what is are the chances of a hernia exam revealing any problem?

Anyone with medical training or knowledge please reply. The "turn-your-head-and-cough" exam is so touted as necessary. I question it. I don't hear of any statistical data about the majority of men having hernia problems. It seems that doctors are taught to automatically do unnecessary exams as a "precaution" and thus charge more.
