Electron shell changing process?

when an electron changes a shell we know that it either absorbs energy(from lower to higher shell) or radiates energy(from higher to lower shell).this energy could be calculated by the formula e=hu.but my question is that how we can calculate?and how we can get the frequency of an electron?
